Book News, Inc.
Contains 56 chapters arranged in three sections: bio-inert prostheses (insufficient healing); biolized prostheses (surface healing); and biointeractive prosthesis (two-parts: complete and incomplete healing). Topics include the lack of healing in conventional vascular grafts; endothelial cell seeding; surface precoating in the 1980s and 1990s; micro- and macro-vascular endothelial cell transplantation; taming of adverse responses; facilitation of healing; scaffold engineering; matrix engineering; and cell engineering. -- Copyright © 1999 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR All rights reserved

Book Description
This book is about the perfect vascular graft: A hypothetical discussion of what it is and how one may go about producing it. In spite of ongoing biomaterials research, synthetic small diameter vascular prostheses still perform significantly worse than autologous vein grafts. The main reason for this disappointing situation lies in the incompleteness of healing of current grafts in humans. Even after decades of implantation, surfaces remain free of endothelium. By exploring some basic biological areas and introducing the background of clinical and pathological failures and demands, this book shall serve as a comprehensive guide, furthering the research initiatives of academic vascular surgeons, scientists and industry researchers.

Rating 5.0

Exceptional writing.

Very useful for students of tissue engineering. The suthors extract fundamental principles from their vast knowledge of laboratory and clinical data. The book is well organized and provides a rigorous treatment of all aspects of vascular graft design. As a bonus, it is also enjoyable to read.

A Must for Biomedical Engineering Personnel!

This book explores the basic biology, clinical background and pathology of synthetic vascular graft failure, and discusses new approaches that have occurred in vascular tissue engineering over the last few decades.

It is a must for researchers in this field, who will find a large amount of useful information in the book, and will also be able to learn from the experiences of those who have been working for decades on the development of prosthetic vascular grafts. The editors have made significant contributions to the development of vascular prosthetic grafts, and in fact the chapters written by each of these two are some of the best in the book. No book can serve the needs of everyone, and because of its intense and expanded look at the historical perspectives of this dynamic field, this book provides a richness from which everyone, regardless of the aspect of biomedical engineering they study, can benefit.
