The volumes cover, roughly, v.1, the Gram-negatives except those in v.3; v.2, the Gram-positives less actinomycetes; v.3, the archaeobacteria, cyanobacteria and remaining Gram-negatives; and v.4, actinomycotes (). Bergey's manual has established itself over the decades as the standard reference in the field. The new format will allow quicker publication and provides data on ecology, enrichment and isolation, descriptions of species and their determinative characteristics, maintenance and preservation--all in service of bacterial taxonomy.
