This reference explains the chemical, physical, and structural properties of polysaccharides and synthetic and biodegradable polymers, and describes medical applications of biomaterials and polymers. Part I examines fundamental questions of polymer synthesis, types of polymers used for medical purposes, and modification of polymers to increase their biocompatibility. Applications of natural and synthetic biomaterials are reviewed. Part II deals with use of polymeric biomaterials in tissue engineering, ophthalmic delivery, vascular prostheses, dental and maxillofacial surgery, blood contacting, skin graft polymers, and medical adhesives and textiles. Part II also provides background for understanding drug delivery and the use of drug polymers and drug carrier polymers.
