This reference begins with an overview of hemodialysis, then offers chapters devoted to preoperative assessment and anesthetic techniques for access surgery, followed by material on hemodialysis access, fistulae and grafts, surveillance and salvage techniques, and the pathophysiology of access failure at cellular and biochemical levels. There are also chapters on dialysis complications, central venous access catheters used for nondialysis indications, peritoneal dialysis, and catheter placement techniques. At the end of each chapter is a modified outline of the NFK-DOQI Clinical Practice Guidelines for Vascular Access on the chapter topic with recommendations for dealing with common problems in dialysis access. Berman is chief of vascular surgery at Carondelet St. Mary's Hospital, and research professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Arizona-Tucson.Copyright © 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
